As data centers continue to multiply across the globe to meet the rising demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, one uncomfortable truth is becoming increasingly clear: local neighborhoods are often footing part of the bill—especially when it comes to electricity. Though marketed as engines of economic growth and technological advancement, these massive facilities frequently receive favorable treatment in the form of tax breaks, discounted utility rates, and public infrastructure upgrades—all of which shift costs onto everyday residents. While tech giants profit, local communities bear the financial and environmental consequences.

The Scale of Energy Consumption

Data centers are among the most energy-intensive facilities in the world. They must run 24/7, storing and processing information for everything from social media to AI tools like ChatGPT. A single large data center can consume as much electricity as 50,000 homes. This constant demand places enormous pressure on local power grids, often requiring utility companies to expand infrastructure, increase capacity, and maintain service at extremely high reliability levels.

The problem is, the cost of meeting this demand doesn’t just fall on the data center operators—it’s frequently passed down to local taxpayers and ratepayers.

How Subsidies Work

1. Discounted Electricity Rates

Many utility companies, often publicly regulated or municipally owned, offer special electricity rates to data centers in order to attract them. These rates are significantly lower than what regular households or small businesses pay per kilowatt-hour. The reasoning is that large consumers deserve volume discounts, but in practice, this leads to imbalanced cost-sharing.

Utilities still need to make up the difference somewhere, so they often spread the remaining infrastructure and operational costs across all other customers. As a result, residential energy bills may increase, especially in areas with multiple high-demand tech facilities.

2. Infrastructure Upgrades Paid by the Public

To support the energy needs of a data center, power companies often must build new substations, expand grid capacity, or install high-voltage transmission lines. Rather than requiring the company building the data center to foot the entire bill, governments or utility commissions often approve the costs to be covered by public funds or added to general utility rates.

For example, in some U.S. states, the construction of substations specifically for data center operations has been approved as a “system upgrade” benefiting everyone—even when the usage is almost exclusively by the data center.

Data centers also benefit from property tax exemptions, sales tax holidays on equipment, and sometimes direct subsidies. While not strictly related to electricity, these incentives reduce the operational costs of running energy-intensive facilities. However, behind this digital revolution lies a very real and growing problem: the data centers that power AI systems. These facilities, often hidden from public view, consume massive amounts of energy and water, contribute to environmental degradation, centralize power in the hands of a few corporations, and raise serious ethical and geopolitical concerns. While AI itself is neither inherently good nor bad, the infrastructure that sustains it demands critical scrutiny.

Environmental Impact

One of the most significant issues with AI data centers is their environmental footprint. Training large-scale AI models, especially those involving deep learning, requires immense computational power. This translates into enormous energy consumption. For example, training a single large language model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their lifetimes, according to researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. And that’s just training—running these models daily for millions of users adds exponentially more to the energy burden.

Beyond electricity, water usage is another concern. Many data centers use evaporative cooling systems to prevent overheating, and this consumes millions of gallons of water annually. Although not yet officially recognized as a medical diagnosis, the concept has gained attention from mental health professionals, researchers, and ethicists who are beginning to observe patterns of psychological disturbance linked to AI use.

Psychosis itself is a mental condition characterized by a disconnection from reality. It often includes symptoms such as hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not present), delusions (strongly held false beliefs), disorganized thinking, and emotional disturbances. The Illusion of Thinking: A Summary

This research paper, “The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity”, published by researchers at Apple, looks at how well advanced AI models can actually reason, especially when faced with hard problems. The authors ask an important question: Are these models really "thinking," or just pretending to think in a way that looks smart on the surface?

To explore this, the researchers tested AI models called Large Reasoning Models (LRMs). These are special types of language models designed to reason through problems step-by-step, often using something called chain-of-thought, which means they "explain" their answer as they go. This sounds smart—but does it hold up when the problems get really tough?

To find out, the researchers created a series of logic puzzles, like Tower of Hanoi, River Crossing, Checker Jumping, and others. These puzzles are designed in a way that allows the difficulty to be adjusted gradually. The harder the puzzle, the more steps are needed to solve it. This allowed the team to carefully study how the AI models behave as the problems become more complex.

They discovered something surprising. At low levels of difficulty, models that don’t use chain-of-thought often did better. That’s because the models using detailed reasoning sometimes overthink simple problems or make mistakes along the way. When the puzzle was moderately difficult, the reasoning models improved—they used their step-by-step thinking to stay organized and usually performed better.

But when the problems became very complex, both types of models broke down. The models made more mistakes and often didn’t even try to use their full capacity to reason. In fact, even though the models had enough room (tokens and memory) to think through the problem, they often gave up or used less effort. This shows a major limitation in how these AI systems deal with complexity.

One of the biggest takeaways is that reasoning doesn't scale well in current AI models. You can’t just give them more space to think and expect better results. Even when given more time or steps to figure something out, they often don’t get better at solving hard problems. Their reasoning becomes less clear and more error-prone, especially as the number of steps needed to solve the problem increases.

Another issue is that the reasoning steps they generate can look correct on the surface but still be wrong or misleading. Sometimes, the model starts reasoning in the right direction but then goes off track in the middle. Other times, it guesses the right answer but the reasoning doesn’t actually support it. This raises the concern that models might look smart, but aren’t truly understanding the problem.

The paper also points out that many AI models don’t stick to correct procedures—even when those procedures are included in the prompt. For example, if you give the AI the exact steps for solving a puzzle, it might still skip steps or do them in the wrong order once the task becomes complex. That shows the models struggle with following strict logic or algorithms consistently.

Overall, this research shows that AI models today may give the illusion of reasoning, but they are far from truly thinking like humans. They can handle easy and medium-level problems reasonably well, especially when prompted with clear steps. But once the task requires deeper thinking or longer reasoning chains, they often fail or produce sloppy results.

While AI has made impressive advances in recent years, much of the public’s understanding of AI is shaped by science fiction, hype, and misinformation. As a result, there are many common misconceptions about what AI is, what it can do, and where it is heading. Clarifying these misconceptions is essential to having a realistic and informed view of the technology.

1. Misconception: AI Thinks Like Humans

One of the most widespread myths is that AI "thinks" like a human. In reality, AI does not possess consciousness, emotions, or self-awareness. It doesn’t understand context in the way people do. AI systems operate by processing vast amounts of data, identifying patterns, and making predictions based on probabilities. For example, a language model like ChatGPT generates text by predicting the next word in a sequence—not because it understands the meaning behind it.

2. Misconception: AI Is Infallible

Many people assume that AI is always accurate or objective because it's driven by data and algorithms. However, AI is only as good as the data it is trained on.
